From Seattle to Amsterdam
The Graypants design studio was founded in Seattle in 2008 by two former architecture students, Seth and John. What started as a dream has grown into a successful and versatile company.
It all began with the successful Scraplight series. This series directly represents Graypants values: responsible design, responsible materials and responsible production. These values are at the core of their other wonderful collections, such as the Kerflights series.
In 2012, the Amsterdam studio was established as a centre for European production and distribution. Their design studios in Amsterdam and Seattle look for cardboard in their local area. So, it's quite possible that your old cardboard could be transformed into a beautiful Scraplight!
Socially and environmentally responsible production
Graypants believes it is extremely important that their lighting is manufactured in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. This is demonstrated by their collaboration in a social programme in the Netherlands for the production of their Scraplights. In this programme, individuals with disabilities are employed while they learn about recycling.
The carton is carefully cut using a laser and manually assembled with a non-toxic adhesive. The bulbs are then coated with environmentally friendly flame retardants. And, don't be fooled... these models are anything but fragile!
The creative hunger of Graypants
The creative hunger of the designer label goes beyond designer lighting and extends to architectural installations and public art. An example is the Cloud, a chandelier in the shape of a cloud made up of no less than 25,000 ping-pong balls. The team's unique and creative projects also draw attention to environmentally conscious living. For example, their "Balen" project was designed to increase awareness of ocean waste.
“Graypants’ bold creativity leads to diverse designs in products, architecture, and other beautiful objects around the world.”
